Behind the Scenes at HCLE

Preservation

At the same time we are building our Catalog system so that we can track each item as it goes through the digitization process. After the items are cataloged and sustainably preserved we plan to donate the physical objects to institutions equipped to handle them. Destination institutions will not have to repeat the digitization task because our goal is to have all of our digital items freely available. Turn to the section of this wiki about our cataloging process.

Digitization

The digitization and scanning of our Collection requires care to properly preserve the artifact, sufficient resolution to create a usable digital version, and significant efforts at properly describing the items in a consistent fashion. The documentation of the process is in work.

Metadata

Metadata are the precise and consistent descriptions museums, libraries, and archives give to their collections of artifacts and information. While it may seem simple, there are so many ways to describe objects and so many objects to describe that there are also many standards.

Planning

The current estimate is that the virtual museum could be operational within three years for approximately three million dollars with appropriate funding. Funding sources, collaborations, and program improvements can dramatically improve the time and effort required.
